HOLISTIC ACADEMY

EDUCATIONAL CHILD CARE CENTER

DESIGN PROJECT CHOSEN TO REPRESENT FAU AT THE FORT LAUDERDALE CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS DESIGN AWARDS

The Holistic Academy is a complete after-school and summer tutoring facility for children to train both brain and brawn.

The Academy offers its students tutoring in various fields such as math and reading as well as offers a variety of after-school activities and clubs such as music, art, drama, sports, and swimming. The Holistic Academy provides its students with transportation from their primary schools to its facility, consists of a safe drop-off and pick-up area for private transportation, and provides its employees with free parking spaces.

The Academy is located in South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, a natural site which features coral rocks and with visible changes in the topography.

Representing this building is its 3-dimensional structure. This structure was encouraged due to the ground's slope. While the ground on which this building was built might have prompted a more heavy and massive structure, the changes in the topography as well as the metallic ribbon used, aided in constructing such a building in a more light and airy fashion. In order to highlight the contrast, materials of various geometrical forms were used. Both a grid-like framework as well as a light and curved structure were employed. The main concept of this project was to develop a curved wall, which creates defined spaces on its exterior front, and defines the interior face of the structure. The wall wraps the structure on its south and west borders and possesses a variety of functional tasks: aiding in the reduction of heat entering the building through direct sunlight while allowing natural circulation to enter, providing its dwellers with privacy, and operating as a constructive wall which supports the system of ramps that surround the entire building.
